چکیده

[1] We present results from the cross-correlations of seismic noise recordings among pairs of stations in the Parkfield network, California. When performed on many station pairs at short ranges, the noise correlation function (NCF) is the passive analog to a shot gather made with active sources. We demonstrate the presence of both a P-wave and a Rayleigh wave in the NCF. A time-frequency analysis allows us to separate the two wave packets that are further identified through their polarization. Arrival times were estimated from the NCF and they compared favorably with predictions using ray tracing in a regional velocity model and with the velocity gradient across the San Andreas Fault. a r t i c l e i n f o Keywords: P-wave microseism travel-time anomaly body-wave tomography storm Array analysis of seismic noise has the potential to be very useful in improving body-wave tomography of Earth structure, just as noise cross-correlation methods have recently proven successful in surface-wave tomography. Beamforming of seismic noise recorded in southern California reveals P-wave ar...

Shear-wave imaging from traffic noise using seismic interferometry by cross-coherence

We apply seismic interferometry to traffic noise to retrieve both body waves and surface waves. Our preferred algorithm in the presence of highly variable and strong additive random noise uses cross-coherence, which uses normalization by the spectral amplitude of each of the traces, rather than cross-correlation or deconvolution. This normalization suppresses the influence of additive noise and...

Shear wave anisotropy from crosscorrelation of seismic noise in the Parkfield pilot hole

S U M M A R Y We use cross-correlation of seismic noise recorded at stations in the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) pilot hole to extract P and S waves and measure S-wave anisotropy on the horizontal components. The data are recorded at seven three-component stations at depths from 1857 to 2097 m in the pilot hole. In late September and early 2004 October drilling noise underneat...

Short Note Earthquake Centroid Locations Using Calibration from Ambient Seismic Noise

Earthquakes occur in complex geology, making it difficult to determine their source parameters and locations because of uncertainty in path effects. We can avoid some of these problems by applying the cut-and-paste (CAP) method, which allows for timing shifts between phases, assuming a 1D model, and determines source parameters. If the travel times or lags of the phases due to path effects are ...
